Ognyana Teneva

Born in 1985 in Bulgaria, post-graduation from Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar” in fashion design I moved to Antwerp, Belgium where I currently study and work.
After discovering the wide possibilities and freedom to experiment, that contemporary jewelry art gives, I did transition from fashion design to jewelry making.
My most recent project is series of works called “Transmogrification”. Through those artistic pieces I have been trying to investigate where the borders between transient and everlasting begins and how we define them. At first, when I began this project, the main accent was to emphasize the ever-growing concern of how we use plastic, such as packaging on daily basis. It made me think of alternative ways to give it a second life. While studying the physical properties of the material I found the vast potential to alter its form and through repetitive modules to give it structure and let those newly composed shapes unfold. The final pieces give the sensation of a living being, yet with architectural rigidity and form. It recalls us that working hand in hand makes humanity evolve.

I am a jewellery-maker transitioning from architectural practice towards narrative objects and speculative adornment. I see my current practice as an exploratory journey into the development of jewellery and objects as stimuli for socio-cultural expression, inquiry and intrigue. I employ different working methods and materials in the creation of my work; however, I am primarily engaged with copper electroforming and patination. My electroformed copper pieces emphasize the myriad forms, textures and colours assumed by copper in its growth and decay. By superimposing the speculative nature of copper growth with conformist architectural forms and identifiable everyday objects, I make jewellery to challenge my own, as well as the viewer/wearer’s aesthetic sensibilities and values.
Having questioned the premise of jewellery as an art form over the last two years, both in academic and professional settings, I am keen on establishing a new position for contemporary jewellery practice in India - extending the discipline beyond the realms of adornment and perceived preciousness. Responding to issues of the environment, as well as socio-cultural paradoxes, I wish to confront humanity with my imagined realities and extrapolated unrealities using jewellery as a visual and tactile medium.

Sara Progressi

VDW - Jewerly Selection 2021

The VDW Jewelry Selection 2021 has a long tradition and over the years has spread globally, targeting contemporary jewellery developers by stimulating creation on a specific theme. Participants come from literally all over the world and will compete in 2021 on the theme "Dazzle me!" An exhortation, with an exclamation mark, to create a piece of jewellery that captures attention and truly surprises those who look at it "straight in the eye". A challenge to play with light, colours, reflections and so much more, who knows?

The prize-winners will be exhibiting at the Venice Design Week from 9 to 17 October and among the prizes there is the possibility of exhibiting in prestigious galleries that have a section dedicated to contemporary jewellery, such as OONA gallery in Berlin, OHMYBLUE in Venice, Creativity oggetti in Turin, 15metriquadri in Udine. In addition, a communication plan dedicated to promoting the work of individual designers will be implemented through the Venice Design Week portal and media partners, which will highlight new points of view and capture the public's attention by directing it towards individual designers.

The commission is composed by Maria Rosa Franzin - Associazione Gioiello Contemporaneo AGC, Anna Schetelich - OONA Galerie Berlin, Elena Rizzi - OHMYBLUE gallery Venice, Roberto Zanon architect and Professor of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts, Valeria Accornero - journalist and blogger, Marianna Serandrei - owner of Ca' Pisani Design Hotel.
